Graduate Profile

    Sergey Postnikov

Sergey Postnikov completed his bachelor degree in 2003 at the Novosibirsk State University in Russia. In his undergraduate studies, Sergey specialized in particle accelerators. At the same time, he started to become more interested in astrophysics than accelerators. This interest brought him to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University in the fall of 2003. Currently, he conducts research in the physics and astrophysics of neutron stars and other topics in nuclear astrophysics under the supervision of Prof. Madappa Prakash. His primary interest is in the equation of state and transport properties of dense nuclear matter. He is also studying tidal effects in in-spiraling binary neutron stars and their associated gravitational wave emissions, as manifested in their ``Love numbers'' that characterize the quadrupole polarizabilities of neutron stars.

When not consumed by physics, Sergey likes to study the Bible and philosophy. He is passionate about healthy living. Also, he enjoys fixing his car and origami. Volleyball and martial arts are his favorite sports. Having grown up in the small town of Nogliki on the island of Sakhalin, Sergey really appreciates Athens, and finds the local bicycle path perfect for campus sightseeing and recreational walking. He is part of a large international community at Ohio University, and uses his free time as a great opportunity to make new friends, gaining exposure to different cultures.
