Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy Degrees at Ohio University College of Arts and Sciences Students majoring in physics at Ohio University work toward either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. For all degrees in Arts and Sciences, there is a requirement of two years of a foreign language. Students who have taken foreign languages in high school receive an exemption for one year of this college requirement for each two years of study in high school. If a student has received partial exemption from the language requirement, it is important to continue the foreign language immediately before the high school material is forgotten. Note that the B.A. requires two years of the same language; the B.S. requirement is two years of one language or one each of two languages. English 151 is also taken during the first year. Other distribution requirements should be fit in around the physics and math courses listed. 1) Bachelor of Arts in Physics (BA 3331) This degree is recommended if you want a general education with an emphasis on physics and/or astronomy; have plans for further education or employment in an interdisciplinary field or desire a dual major in physics and chemistry, biological sciences, geological sciences, etc. This program requires a total of 36 hours in physics and/or astronomy at or above the 200 level. Normally this would not be sufficient for entry into a graduate program in physics, but additional courses could be added if desired. The required courses in physics are 210, 251, 252, 253 and 254. A typical schedule would be:
2) Bachelor of Science in Physics The Bachelor of Science in physics is the main path to a career in physics, applied physics, astronomy or meteorology. The Bachelor of Science degree requires you to concentrate your program of study in physics and math, devoting about two-thirds of your college course work to classes in these areas. 2a) Physics major (BS 3331) provides a solid foundation of physics whether you intend to start your career immediately after you graduate or decide to pursue an advanced degree. This degree requires a minimum of 54 hours in physics. The quarters in which they are typically taken are:.
(*physics elective, **recommended) This degree also requires 12 quarter hours in PHYS, ASTR or MATH above the 300 level, in CHEM above the 150 level or in BIOS above the 200 level. 2b) Applied physics major (BS 3332) is a program for those wishing industrial employment after the bachelor degree or those contemplating graduate work in engineering.
Twelve additional hours in geology, chemistry or engineering to make a subprogram must be approved by an advisor. 2c) Astrophysics major (BS 3335) is a program for those with a strong interest in astronomy or astrophysics. Graduates of this program have gone on to successfully complete advanced degrees in astronomy and astrophysics.
* recommended 2d) Physics meteorology major (BS 3338) is a program for those planning to obtain an M.S. degree in meteorology. The following courses are required for this program:
plus two courses in computer programming or quantitative methods, e.g., CS 201, 202, Phys 303. |
