A brief introduction to chaos theory is presented for the general reader of the Materials Science Research Society Bulletin. Experimental methods for studying dynamic systems that exhibit chaos are outlined and verious pitfalls are discussed. Recent applications of control to chaotic systems is described in some detail and possible future applications are discussed.
